I tried to banish negativity for a week

Nobody wants to be a Negative Nelly. So we all should just take all of those bad feelings and squash them down to the bottom of our souls and not deal with them. That way we won’t make people uncomfortable. So, for one week, I tried to banish negativity from my life and be a happy person 24/7.

What was the experiment?

The experiment was simple, I was not going to have any negativity for a whole week. That is a pretty tall order for someone who enjoys a good bitching session over a cup of tea and a bun. But, I have heard great things about the concept of “no negativity”. It is all about having a positive mindset. First of all, this is not supposed to be about avoiding negativity, it is about how you deal with it. People who are negative are more likely to say no, and experience health problems. Actually, there is a whole list of ways that you can benefit from being less negative, and plenty of ways that you can get rid of the negativity in your life.

When it comes to looking at what brings your negative emotions to the front, you need to have a really good look at who you are and what makes you tick. Do you spend too much time on social media, watching the drama unfold between people? Is it your environment? If your home is a mess then there is a good chance that it is affecting your mindset in some way.

How did it go?

It went surprisingly well considering some of the stuff that is going on in my life. Like I said at the beginning, this is not about avoiding the negative stuff, it’s about dealing with it in a constructive way. It was not about taking all of the hate and madness that is found within and squashing it down so you don’t have to deal with them. This is not supposed to be a form of emotional bypass. Shit happens, you gotta deal with it, but it is how you deal with it.

A lot of it is to do with perspective. If the kids are being annoying, you need to ask why. Are they bored? Are they hungry? What is wrong that they are climbing the walls of the house? The big question is, what can you do about it as the parent? The same thing applies to your pets. Are the dogs being annoying because they haven’t been walked? You had better stick your trainers on and take them for a wander. Does the house resemble something that could be mistaken for day 5 in an exorcism? You had better grab the cleaning stuff and get off the internet then, although wait until you read the rest of the post. One thing that I realised is that a lot of the things that make me negative are my own doing, and only I have the power to change them.

Will I keep at it?

This was a hard one but it was worth it. When things go wrong, and they have a tendency to do that sometimes, it is tempting to throw your hands in the air and scream bloody murder. Sometimes it is better to take the no negativity mindset because blowing your top isn’t worth it. Although sometimes it is better to blow your top. It is human nature and when you are dealing with extreme stupidity, for the sake of your sanity (and possible safety of others) sometimes you need to release that badass beast.

  1. I tried this for a month. In my case, it worked as I faced every negativity during my school, so in my adult life, it does not affect me that much.Unless it is a biggie. And you know I have much better solution to deal with negativity via game, if you want it let me know.

  4. I love your take on this. It is definately how you handle the situation. I had a really rough couple of days last week and it was so hard for me to be positive. But as soon as I took a breath and made myself look at the situations differently, things got so much easier for me.

  6. banishing negativity is not a one day or one week job, i think its a constant learning and practicing. I do this daily because we have to deal so many people and situation on regular basis.

    1. Very true. I started with the one week to see if there was an immediate effect and there was. Since then I’ve been trying to work at it every day but it just goes to show what a few days of effort can achieve with this 🙂

    1. I try to steer clear as well but there is only so much time I can hide in the house away from people before it becomes weird 😀

    1. It was a fun experiment and I have been trying to keep it going, so much better than being negative 24/7 over the little things.

    1. That sounds like a great idea! It’s hard to get away from the news sometimes so I try to limit the amount I see rather than have it in my face 24/7.

    1. It is definitely worth giving it a go. I only tried it for a week to see if there would be any immediate effect and there was. Although I only recorded a week of the experiment, I’m still using this mindset.
