When I had this post in my mind I was going to start it differently until I saw a news piece on Jerome Jarre. Jerome is a Vine video star who has over 4 million subscribers on his channel. This level of interest in him has got the attention of some big players in the advertising industry and recently he was offered 1 million dollars to advertise on his channel but he had to stay in New York for one year. He told them to stick it. Turning down a million is a big deal no matter who you are, and you all probably think he is crazy but I agree with his reasons.
When you have something that allows you complete freedom to express yourself the last thing you want to do is turn it over to someone else. His channel is his baby, just like this blog is mine. After spending two years trying to get magazines and papers to pick up my work I decided that it wasn’t worth it. Why should I spend my time chasing down these people when I have somewhere that I can write exactly what I want? My last few pieces were turned down because they “weren’t what they were looking for” despite them telling me that they wanted “a fresh, new take on things”. Before you ask, yes I asked for feedback on them, and was told they were great pieces but just not suitable. That was it. I have no idea why they turned them down especially seeing as they said they loved them, writing style was great, they were drawn in and felt connected to the piece. So why continue to chase them when I’m told I’m great but they just don’t want my stuff? That’s why I decided that I will never write for another magazine or paper, the only place you will find my work is here or in any of my books, no matter how much money I am offered because here I can deliver my own truth. Jerome was faced with the same thing.
You might think we are both crazy for thinking this way but it goes back to want I was saying in another post about what you would do for a million pounds. One thing I wouldn’t do is hand my writing over to a publication for it to be manipulated is something that isn’t my truth. And that’s why I asked my readers to hit the subscribe and the paypal buttons. I can’t speak for Jerome but I’m pretty sure he would ask the same thing of his fans. Having support from a fan base is so much more important than having a big flashy business deal dropped in your lap. Having people support you is so much more meaningful than money. Anyone can earn money like that, just look at the Kardashian’s.
So, let me leave you with this parting thought, would you rather read or watch something which is true to the person who created it, or something which has be bought and manipulated by the big media? Support your favourite bloggers and film makers. Go to local gigs and see what talent there is in your area. And don’t buy into what the media is selling. I may not get rich and famous with this attitude but I will never compromise my truth.
I hope Jerome does well and continues to follow his own path. And thank you Jerome for standing up for the rest of us.
