The Muppet Christmas Carol is the 90’s retelling of the classic Charles Dicken’s story, A Christmas Carol. The Great Gonzo plays the part of Charles Dickens to tell us the story of Ebenezer Scrooge with the help of Rizzo the Rat. Michael Caine plays Mr Scrooge as he faces the Three Ghosts of Christmas.

The story is based on the original story by Charles Dickens. Ebenezer Scrooge is a cold-hearted miser who hates Christmas, charity and thinks that giving someone the day off with pay as a form of theft. On Christmas Eve, he goes to bed and is visited by the ghosts of his former business partners who are bound in the chains of their greed. They warn him about the visits he is about to receive and the fate that waits for him if he doesn’t change his ways. That night, he is visited by three ghosts- the Ghost of Christmas Past who shows him his previous Christmas holidays, the Ghost of Christmas Present who shows him how others spend their day, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come who shows him is future.
Thoughts on the Story
This is a fun retelling of a classic which will wet the appetite of the young reader. The movie is filled with catchy songs and dance numbers that help to break up the bleakness of some parts. Most of the characters are played by the Muppets, including the ghosts. This is a great version of the story that young viewers will understand without being scared. Rizzo the Rat provides some comic relief when the story gets too heavy for the younger ones.
This is one of my favourite Christmas movies and probably the first one that I owned on video (yeah, I’m that old, I had videos as a child). This is my go-to family Christmas movie every year since it came out in 1993 on video (it was released in the cinema the year before). Michael Caine gives a brilliant performance as Scrooge and the Muppets provide an amazing supporting cast that brings this story to life.
