When it comes to brilliant ideas, there’s a lot you can pull off in your own house. Getting a little step stool so you can reach the top cupboard without falling over, getting blackout curtains to make sure you’re getting the best sleep you can at night, having a waste paper basket in every room of the house so you can get on with whatever you’re doing without needing to walk away from the focus you’re in. Either way, it’s these small changes you introduce that make the most difference in how practical your lifestyle is.
And when your house is as practical as it can be, you’re going to be much happier in your living situation. You see, changing things around your house can give you a real refreshed feeling, and there’s a lot you can do for your mental and physical health just by sprucing up the space around you. So if you feel like you’re stagnating inside your own house, a bit down and out because you don’t like your surroundings, it’s time to make some fast changes.
Here’s some tips on the areas to target in your rooms that’ll do a lot for your mental state. If you’re looking for something in the way of a quick fix (of course, they’re not going to make everything better!), this is where to start.
Start with Your Bed
Let’s begin with where you start each day, as waking up from a fresh and clean bed is the best way to start your day. So try to change your sheets once a week, and at least twice a month. Climbing into a crisp and fresh bed after a hard day at work is going to be one of life’s little rewards, and one of the best for making a situation so much smoother on your energy levels.
At the same time, when you wake up in the morning, try to make an effort to make your bed as soon as you get out of it. When it looks neat and tidy everytime you come home from work, you’re going to feel instantly better about hanging out in your room. Not to mention the little productivity boost it can give you when you remember one of the most mundane yet optional tasks you polished off that morning!
The Curtains Over the Window
Speaking of curtains, dressing up your windows is something that can make a huge difference to how you feel about your house, and even from the outside in they can improve the look of the neighborhood. And that’s something you can’t give up on when it comes to changing the little things, as it’s one of the moves with the biggest impact.
Something like linen curtains will do well here, as they’re light and airy, and perfect for the warm weather we’re experiencing. When you’ve got sun blazing down on your house day in and out, you want to make sure no excess rays are getting trapped inside your house and slowly boiling you!
The Plant Pot on the Coffee Table
If you don’t have any plants around your house, what are you doing? Being able to walk into a room and immediately feel refreshed by what you see compared to the outside world is made so much easier by having some greenery in your home. However, you need the right kind of greenery, and something you know you won’t have to spend too much time maintaining.
So if you’re a low effort kind of person, thankfully there’s some plants out there that will do the bulk of the work for you. It’s a great alternative to wanting to keep fish as a pet when you know you’re the kind of person who would forget to feed them or keep putting off cleaning out their tank.
Something like an Aloe plant can be quite nice to have perched on your coffee table (or your bookshelf if you’re in a habit of knocking that around), as it brightens up an otherwise neutral space. It’s also extremely practical at the same time, as you’ll be able to effectively ignore it for a couple of weeks at a time before you need to water it again, as its soil needs to completely dry out before you top up its water supply.
Get a Table Lamp
Having a lamp on your bedside table or a sideboard in the living room is often going to be the saving grace when you have a headache or otherwise want to relax. It’s not good to try and read in a completely dark room with only your phone or reader screen to light the way, but the overhead light still just isn’t the right mood for you. It also makes it extremely hard to fall asleep if it’s on all the time!
It also means you’ll have a light source at your eye level, which makes it a lot easier to see, and puts far less strain on your eyes. There’s a reason we go to bed when it’s dark outside after all. Plus, table lamps are in the inexpensive range of products, come in a variety of styles, and can be peppered wherever you want them to be throughout your home.
But if they’re not for you, and you really don’t have the money to be setting up another appliance, you can always go down the candle route of lighting. They only cost a few pennies and can be bought in bulk, so you can light them whenever you need them, and even have a nice new aroma floating around your environment.
What Should You Change?
If you ever feel bad about a place in your house, it’s time to make a difference. And as you can see, there’s plenty of ways you can do that. Take the time to assess your surroundings now, and even just try cleaning up a little. That can work wonders on your psyche!
