It’s been a while since we had a beauty edit….too long in fact. My empties box is overflowing with the stuff that has been tried and tested in the name of science! But are all these products up to scratch? Are you spending your hard earned money on the right stuff? Read on for some info and inspo…..
For some reason, I don’t seem to go through that much make-up. But this time I have two different foundations. The MUA Skin Define Hydro Foundation is by far my favourite out of the two, it was light and gave a dewy finish to my skin. The only reason I have included the Avon Ideal Flawless Cream to Powder Foundation is that I want to complain about it. It is by far one of the worst foundations I have ever used! I tried brushes, sponges, everything to get it to go on and not look like I was a teenager from the 1990’s when pan sticks and no blending was a thing.
Somehow, I managed to get through three mascaras since my last posting. I honestly don’t have a favourite out of these, they are all amazing! Eyeko Black Magic Mascara was the wetter of the bunch but that made it last that bit longer than the others. Benefit Roller Lash Mascara comes in the cutest packaging and the Revlon Volume plus Length Mascara is a good bit cheaper than the others but still holds its own.
The eyeliners I used have to be two of my favourite to date. The Rimmel London Scandaleyes Gel Liner is a cracker gel liner for creating flicks on the eyes. The Cynthia Rowley Beauty Eyeliner was one that I got from Birchbox when I was still a subscriber and is an exclusive to them, which almost makes me want to subscribe again! For the brows, I have tested Benefit Goof Proof Brow Pencil and fell in love with it! It is impossible to get your brows wrong with this.
The final items that I tested were theBalm- Balm Bronzer, a small tester I got from Birchbox and loved. It isn’t chalky or powdery on your face, but not glittery either. The Laval Creme Powder was a great, cheap powder that I used to set my foundation. The Lip Smacker Coca Cola Lip Gloss was part of a set and this is the first full one that I have managed to finish.
I seem to have gone through a mountain of face masks recently. Most of these are mud masks and I don’t have a favourite. The BeautyPro Black Diamond peel off mask is one of the ones that was doing the rounds on Youtube. You know the ones, people pulling gunk out of their pores. The Whish face mask is another Birchbox exclusive and I love the vintage-inspired packaging, very retro! The next face mask is another mud mask, La Theorie des Volcans Noir Eternea smelt gorgeous and was perfect for relaxing in the bath. Mudmasky is the final mudmask that graced my face and it held its own against the others.
The Simple Facial Cleansing Wipes are in a limited edition packet but they are the normal wipes. I found these really handy at the end of the day and the cloths were gentle on my lash extensions. ELEMIS Hydra-Nourish Night Cream is a pricey cream that is great for repairing skin while. I haven’t had a problem with my skin in this cold weather, despite the heating and rain. If you do need some extra moisture for your skin, I recommend Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion. This has been a go-to cream of mine for about 10 years now and it never fails me in the rubbish weather. I’m fairly new to the whole face primer thing, so what is a better way to break myself in than using This Works In Transit Camera Close-Up, a favourite of Victoria Beckham (apparently).
Amie New Leaf Deep Pore Exfoliating Polish is one of my favourite face scrubs ever! It completely clears your skin and leaves you looking brighter, and dare I say, younger looking too. AURELIA PROBIOTIC SKINCARE MIRACLE CLEANSER is another one of those products that you didn’t know that you needed until you started using it. These two products combined meant that my skin was brighter and more youthful looking than ever. I don’t think my skin was this good as a teenager. Bee Good Facial Exfoliator is another great exfoliator and it is made with British honey, nice! I only got a wee sample of Clarins Multi-Active Day Cream but it was so good, it was worth a mention. It smells incredible and really brightens your skin. And speaking of brightening, the final piece of the face puzzle is eye cream. GinZing by Origins Refreshing Eye Cream To Brighten And Depuff is amazing to use morning and night to help keep puffy eyes at bay.
Body and Bath
I’m all about keeping clean so it shouldn’t be surprising that there is a mountain of different shower gels here. Jelly Belly Body Wash is one of my favourites at the minute. It foams up really well and they smell just like jelly beans but don’t eat it. Another couple of tasty treats for in the shower are Imperial Leather Cherry Bakewell Shower, Imperial Leather Foamy Banana Shower and Imperial Leather Marshmallow Shower. All of them make the shower smell like a sweet shop! Avon Senses Delightful Orchard Hydrating Shower Gel was another good one. I know I’m not always the biggest fan of Avon but I give credit when it is due, and I do like the shower gels. Even Avon Naturals Shower Gel, Strawberry and Guava was good (although I wasn’t keen on the smell) and it done the job in the shower. My final bottle is Original Source Skin Quench Moisturising Shower. I am a big fan of Original Source and how it smells in the steam of the shower.
I don’t know about anyone else, but as a bit of a gym bunny, I find I have to switch it about with my deodorants. Mitchum Women Advanced Powder Fresh Anti-Perspirant Deodorant Spray is one of my favourites. This is a really hardcore deodorant for those of us who like to hit the gym. I tried out a few bottles of this in different scents. Vaseline Antiperspirant Deodorant Active Fresh is another great one for my fellow gym bunnies. This one isn’t as drying as the Mitchum and makes a good alternative when you need it. But for those days when you aren’t in the gym, try Nivea Women’s Anti-Perspirant Spray, Pearl and Beauty. It is really good for everyday wear. Now, for those of you who are in-between those activity levels, I have two other options for you. The first is Right Guard Women Xtreme Ultra Cool Anti-Perspirant Aerosol Deodorant which has a great freshness to it. The other is Sure Cotton Dry Anti-Perspirant For Women. Both are excellent choices if you are generally active during the day but don’t go as far as needing a squeegee after the gym.
Coffee scrubs have been all the rage recently and I was lucky enough to get to test one. Royal Coffee Scrub actually smelt like chocolate orange rather than coffee. And because it is natural, it is better for the environment. And speaking of stuff that is good for the environment, I also got my mitts on some Moringa oil. This is an amazing multi-purpose oil that done wonders for my hair and stretch marks. My favourite things to use in the bath is soap and I got this industrial sized bar of NESTI DANTE Dei Colli Fiorentini, Cypress Tree Soap for bath time. I’ve also been using a lot of Imperial Leather Cream Bath recently because the bottles are huge!
No bathing routine would be complete without body cream and I’m surprised I only went through three bottles. Dove Body Lotion is great for after the gym when your skin might feel a bit stingy with sweat. Aveeno Daily Moisturising Lotion is another good choice for after the gym and is great for your feet too. This one is also suitable for eczema prone skin so it would be handy to have in the bathroom. The final cream, Prismologie, is a great everyday cream that has a really beautiful scent.
As you can imagine, hand washing is a big thing in my house. So I go through handwash like there is no tomorrow. I decided to give Avon Senses Hand Wash a try. I did like it but I could have done with a bigger bottle of each. Simple Kind to Skin Gentle Care Hand Wash is an excellent choice for in the bathroom or the kitchen. The same applies to Dettol Hand Wash too. My final handwash choice is Radox Moisturise Handwash with Chamomile & Jojoba Oil which can be used in the kitchen or the bathroom, but I prefer this one in the bathroom.
After all this handwashing, I need to use a good hand cream. Crabtree & Evelyn Hand Therapy and L’OCCITANE are two of the best hand creams that I have ever used. Both brands are thick and beautifully scented. The little lilac tube of cream was part of a Tesco gift set and I kept that cream out in my car. The final piece of my hand beauty puzzle is the Boots nail varnish remover. Because I use normal nail varnish on my nails, I just need something basic to help remove it when it is chipped.
What Beauty Edit would be complete without some scents? Recently I have been wearing Ted Baker EDT Spray and to be honest, it’s ok. It’s not bad but it’s not great. It’s a bit too flowery for me. I also got a few samples of Gabrielle by Chanel Eau de Parfum Spray and it was amazing! This is one of those scents that is definitely worth the money.
