Cod liver oil anyone? | Tried and Tested

cod liver oil

When I was growing up I associated cod liver oil with children in old movies, screwing up their little faces at the taste of a vile liquid. So as an adult, I never expected that I would be telling everyone how much I loved it.

It all started when my black Labrador, Buffy, started having skin problems. Her coat was brittle and her skin flaked all over the house. This had a knock on effect with the rest of the house. My daughter’s eczema flared up, my hubby was itchy, and I couldn’t stop sneezing. One afternoon my mother popped round to see us and inspected Buffy’s coat. A mass of dead skin cells filled the air as my mother brushed, and combed, and poked the poor dog. Her suggestion at the end of it all was cod liver oil capsules.

Instantly, those memories of all those screwed up faces came flooding back, I wasn’t going to put my poor puppy through that torture. It wasn’t until around 3 months had passed that we finally gave in and got the cod liver oil tablets. We were walking past a health food shop and in the window was a big display advertising the very thing we needed (at a knockdown price). Call it fate, call it good luck, call it whatever you want. We got the tablets and within 3 days of Buffy taking them, she was cured. Her coat was a glossy black, her skin was a nice pink colour and there was no more flaking. I was pretty shocked by the almost instant results so I decided to try them out for myself.

Now, my hair is like straw, it’s brittle and dry. Most days I can barely get a hair brush through it. Again, within 3 days of me taking the cod liver oil capsules, I was seeing results. By day 6 I could get the hairbrush through my hair without ripping my scalp off with every stroke. I’ve tried plenty of hair masks and conditioners in the hope that they will tame my frizz and make my life a bit easier but they have all failed tragically. The only problem I had with the capsules was remembering to take them every day, there were a few days when I forgot about them and found my hair turning dry again.

There’s really not much else to say about them, you take the recommended dose on the bottle every day and you have nice glossy hair and no dry skin, even if you’re not a dog. It’s a simple as that.
